16 S. Illinois Street, Belleville Illinois
Since 1931 the Hotel Belleville has stood among Bellevile’s most significant and beautiful buildings. Originally holding offices of the Chamber of Commerce, Retail Merchants’ Association, and St. Clair County Farm Bureau on its first floor, the building stood – and still stands at the heart of Belleville and St Clair County’s business district.
The first floor space still holds an opulent lobby and large enough space for restaurant or retail space. When the building was purchased by the Belleville Diocese in 1961 the first floor was used as a chapel and cafeteria to accommodate the residents who then occupied what became the retirement home’s the upper floors.
Despite the Great Depression, the chamber was able to finance the $400,000 project, with $50,000 of the total raised locally. The six-story hotel had 120 rooms, most with private baths or showers. Its dimensions were 70 foot by 140 foot. The lobby had a two-story ceiling and mezzanine. Terrazzo floors are still visible.
The property was purchased by the City of Belleville in 2009 for $470,000. The financial downturn was at its lowest point and neither buyers nor developers could be found. The building was slated for demolition to make way for a park but since then enthusiasm for finding the right developer for this architectural gem has rallied around the project.
